‘I have terrible migraines that are incapacitating. Are there any risks of Imitrex and breastfeeding?’
If you are having migraines, then you will be happy to know that Imitrex is ok for breastfeeding moms.
Misleading Information
Unfortunately the Physicians Desk Reference, which most doctors use to determine if a drug is safe while you are breastfeeding, states that ‘Sumatriptan (Imitrex) is excreted in human breast milk. Therefore, caution should be exercised when considering the administration of IMITREX Tablets to a nursing woman.’
However, According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, ‘Most drugs likely to be prescribed to the nursing mother should have no effect on milk supply or on infant well-being.’ In addition, they list Imitrex in their list of Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.
That is enough assurance for me to try Imitrex while breastfeeding!
Still have concerns?
However, if you are still concerned, just remember that you can help decrease the amount of any drug that enters your breastmilk ‘by taking the medication just after you have breastfed your baby or just before she is due to have a long nap!
